How To Choose The Perfect Shepherd Hut
A Shepherd Hut is much more than a beautiful addition to your garden or land. It can become an all year round retreat, home office, family and friends occasional accommodation or the start to a new exciting business venture. The key to achieving your vision is to take the time to consider all options and ensure you choose the right specification in the beginning.
Huts from Moorlands handcraft bespoke purpose designed Shepherd Hut solutions from our workshop in the Staffordshire Moorlands. We’ve created this guide to point out the main considerations and decisions you need to make prior to placing any order.

How do you plan to use your hut?
This is the most important point, your intended use will guide almost every single decision you make during your design and buying process. Shepherd Huts are perfect for many uses we recommend spending some time to consider how you want the hut to work for you before looking at the aesthetics of how it will look. Think about views you’d like to capture through windows, how will the hut be accessed?, what heating solutions would you like?, Electrics positions and other utilities you’d like to connect.

Garden Office or Studio
Consider desk placement, natural light, window views, power sockets, lighting, internet access, comfortable year-round temperatures and somewhere to store equipment. A little planning now can make the space far more practical every working day.

Accommodation / Glamping
Think about sleeping, privacy, storage, ventilation, heating and whether you need a bathroom or kitchenette. If you plan to let the hut commercially, investigate planning, building, fire-safety, access and other applicable requirements before committing to a design.

Garden Retreat / Hobbies
For reading, crafting, music or relaxing, focus on the atmosphere you want to create. Seating, built-in storage, lighting, views and the position of doors and windows can make a compact space welcoming.

Business Use
A hut can create a distinctive treatment room, guest space or customer-facing area. Consider expected footfall, durability, cleaning, accessible routes, services and the needs of your customers.
Choose the right build option for you
Take time to investigate all of the available build options available to you. If you have skilled resource available to you then self build can really reduce the budget, or opt for the hassle free option of a professionally crafted turnkey hut.

Chassis Only
A purpose built base on which you can create your own hut. This is best suited to experienced builders who want maximum control over the build. Additional components can be added to ease the build including roof structure and profiled sheets.

Self Build Kits
A package of key structural components to assemble and complete. Best suited to capable DIY customers who want to contribute their own time and skills. Everything included to create a weatherproof shell. Need more components? we offer bespoke packages.

Rolling Shell
A professionally constructed exterior shell, leaving you to plan the interior fit-out. Best suited to buyers who want the main structure taken care of but want to personalise the interior. Perfect for those who have limited workshop space.

Turnkey Hut
A hut designed and fitted out to the agreed specification, ready to use once correctly delivered and sited. Best suited to buyers who prefer a more complete solution with less work to manage themselves.
Buyer’s tip: Compare what is actually included in each quotation, not just the headline price. Materials, insulation, windows, interior finish, services, delivery and site work can all affect the final cost.
The 6 top items to consider before you buy
A well planned hut will bring together a strong structure, a well planned and executed layout and the finer details that make it comfortable to use for its intended purpose.

Size, Layout & Headroom
Measure the available space and consider how people will move around inside. Allow for furniture, doors, storage and any bathroom or kitchen fittings. Think about the usable internal space as well as the external dimensions. Moorlands can create a digital floorplan to help with this process.

Chassis & Construction
The chassis is the foundation of a mobile-style shepherd hut. Ask about its construction, dimensions, axle arrangement, intended loading and how the hut will be transported and positioned. The base and structure should be suitable for the size and finished specification. Ensure it’s strong enough for the intended load.

Insulation & Year-Round Comfort
If you plan to use your hut all year-round, ask about floor, wall and roof insulation, ventilation and suitable heating. There’s a variety of heating & climate control solutions available ensure you research them all. Good comfort comes from considering the whole building rather than relying on a heater alone.

Windows, Doors & Exterior Finish
Window and door positions affect daylight, views, privacy and furniture placement. Take time to think about views you’d like to capture and how you’ll approach your hut. Discuss cladding options, roof finishes, colours and fittings together so the exterior works with your setting and the interior layout.

Interior Fit-Out & Services
Plan lighting, sockets, heating, storage and any plumbing or cooking facilities early. These choices can influence the layout and the work needed later. Confirm exactly which items are included in your chosen build option. Think also about remote control especially of heating allowing you to pre heat the hut in colder months.

Delivery, Access & Site Preparation
Check the route to the final position, gate widths, overhead obstructions, ground conditions, turning space and any slopes. Think about routes for utilities including power, water supply & drainage. Establish who is responsible for offloading, positioning, foundations or supports before placing an order.
Set A Realistic Budget
The true cost of a Shepherd Hut depends on far more than its length or width. The build option selected, quality of materials used, level of finishes both internally and externally and any additional options or accessories selected. All of these points influence the total investment required.

Check Planning Permission Requirements
A shepherd’s hut on wheels is often not itself subject to planning permission because it is portable, but how it is used and any change of use of the land may require permission. A hut used incidentally to the enjoyment of a main dwelling—for working, accommodating guests, practising yoga, painting, reading or listening to music—may not require permission. By contrast, using one as a holiday let on agricultural land will generally require planning permission. Connections to drainage or a septic tank may affect how portable the hut is viewed and can involve Environment Agency guidance. Requirements vary by location, so check with your local planning authority and relevant local plan. Depending on the proposal, a Certificate of Lawful Development or a full planning application may be appropriate; neither guarantees a particular outcome, and Moorlands does not provide legal or planning advice.
