Shepherd Hut Chassis
A stronger foundation for everything you build above it
A shepherd hut can only be as good as the chassis beneath it. Before the floor, walls, fittings and finishes take shape, the chassis needs to provide a strong, rigid and stable base for the finished structure — and for the weight of everything placed inside it.

At Moorlands, our shepherd hut chassis are deliberately over-engineered with strength and rigidity in mind. They are designed to help reduce bounce underfoot and minimise flex as people move around inside the hut, giving your build a more dependable starting point.
Whether you are creating a garden retreat, a workspace or luxury guest accommodation, the chassis helps your finished hut feel substantial, comfortable and built to last.
Build from the ground up with confidence. A robust chassis gives every part of your shepherd hut a solid foundation to build upon.

Why the foundation matters
A hut is a complete structure, and the quality of the space inside depends on more than its visible finishes. A base that moves or flexes as weight travels through the building can affect how secure and comfortable the finished hut feels. That is why the chassis should be treated as an essential part of the build, not an afterthought.
The Moorlands chassis is designed to support the finished structure and the weight of everything placed inside it. Its deliberately over-engineered steel box-section construction helps provide the rigidity needed beneath the floor, helping to minimise unwanted movement as people walk, sit and work inside the hut.
- Strength from the outset — a robust base gives the rest of the build a more secure platform.
- Greater rigidity — the chassis is designed to help reduce bounce and limit flex as weight moves through the structure.
- A better foundation for finishes — floors, walls, fittings and furnishings can reach their full potential when they are built on a stable base.
- Everyday comfort — a solid starting point helps the completed hut feel more substantial, comfortable and dependable.
A beautifully designed shepherd hut cannot reach its full potential if the structure beneath it feels unsteady. Starting with the right chassis helps you build the quality of the finished space from the ground up.
Fixed Axle or Turntable Axle?
Moorlands offers two axle options, each suited to a different type of project. Consider how the hut will be positioned, how easy the site is to access and whether you may need to move the hut after construction.
| Axle option | What it offers | Best suited to |
| Fixed axle chassis | A strong, straightforward option with no steering mechanism. It provides a solid base without the added manoeuvrability of a pivoting front axle. | A hut that will be positioned and remain largely in one place, where manoeuvring after construction is not a priority. |
| Turntable axle chassis | The front axle pivots to make steering, manoeuvring and positioning easier. It offers greater flexibility when moving the hut into place or repositioning it on site. | Projects with restricted site access, a need for precise positioning or the possibility that the hut may be repositioned in future. |
The turntable option provides greater manoeuvrability, but it is not automatically the best choice for every project. The right axle depends on your site, your plans and how you expect to use the hut.
Which Option Is Right For You?
Use the following points to guide your choice:
- Choose a fixed axle if the hut has a clear, stable position and is expected to remain largely in one place. It is the simpler option when steering and future manoeuvring are not important to your plans.
- Choose a turntable axle if access to the site is restricted, the hut needs to be positioned accurately or you want more flexibility to move it in future. The pivoting front axle is designed to make steering and manoeuvring easier.
- Think about the whole project by considering not only how the hut will arrive, but also whether access, landscaping or a change of use could affect its position later on.
- Prioritise the foundation whichever axle you select. Both options are intended to give your build a strong, rigid base for the finished structure and everything placed inside it.
A practical rule of thumb: fixed axle suits a more permanent position, while turntable is worth considering when access and future movement matter.
